Maple Producers Band Together
May 2 1925 - Today marks an important step for Quebec maple producers. One hundred and two producers from the Dorchester and Mégantic counties officially form a cooperative to cope with a monopoly of buyers whose demands threaten to destroy the market.
Since the early 1920s, chaos has reigned in the maple industry. Quebec maple producers have been powerless against those who control the wholesale market - by far the largest outlet - and adopt a "take it or leave it" attitude, offering a measly 4¢ to 5¢ per pound of sugar.
To remedy the situation, the Honorable Jos. Edmond Caron, Minister of Agriculture, directed Cyrille Vaillancourt, head of the honey and maple syrup department, to find a solution. The cooperative project, which was launched with Coopérative Fédérée de Québec manager J.-Arthur Paquet, began operations in 1924 when seventeen producers from Saint-Prosper, Saint-Zacharie, Sainte-Rose, Saint-Philibert, Saint-Benjamin et Saint-Aurélie joined together to prove its viability.

Cent deux producteurs des comtés de Dorchester et de Mégantic viennent d'être officiellement constitués en société coopérative afin de faire front commun contre les exigences qui risquent de provoquer la ruine des marchés.
Depuis le début des années 1920, le chaos règne dans l'industrie de l'Érable. Les acériculteurs québécois sont impuissants devant ceux qui contrôlent le marché du gros - de loin le plus important - et qui leur offrent un maigre 4¢ à 5¢ la livre de sucre «à prendre ou à laisser».
Pour remédier à la situation, le ministre de l'Agriculture du Québec, l'Honorable Jos.-Edmond Caron, a mandaté M. Cyrille Vaillancourt, le chef de son service apicole et sucrier, pour trouver une solution. Réalisé en collaboration avec M. J.-Arthur Paquet, gérant de la Coopérative Fédérée de Québec, le projet de Coopérative a connu ses premières heures en 1924 alors que dix-sept producteurs de St-Prosper, St-Zacharie, Ste-Rose, St-Philibert, St-Benjamin et Ste-Aurélie ont fait la preuve de l'efficacité de la formule.
Officiellement incorporée sous le nom de «Les Producteurs de Sucre d'Érable de
Québec», la coopérative a son siège social à Lévis.
